STEM OPT in the USA: 3 Years of Work Rights Explained

The Optional Practical Training (OPT) program is one of the biggest advantages of studying in the United States. For STEM graduates, it provides up to 3 years of work authorization - a crucial bridge to the H-1B visa.

What is OPT?

OPT allows F-1 students to work in the US for 12 months before or after graduation. The work must be related to your field of study.

The STEM Extension

If your degree is in a designated STEM field, you can extend your OPT by 24 months - giving you a total of 36 months of work authorization.

STEM fields include:

  • Computer Science
  • Engineering (all disciplines)
  • Mathematics
  • Data Science
  • Biological Sciences
  • Physical Sciences
  • How OPT Works

  • Pre-completion OPT: Work while studying (counts against your 12 months)
  • Post-completion OPT: Work after graduation (12 months)
  • STEM extension: 24 additional months if eligible
  • The H-1B Bridge

The 3-year STEM OPT window gives you 3 chances at the H-1B lottery. This significantly increases your odds of obtaining long-term work authorization.

    Tips for Maximizing OPT

  • Choose a STEM-designated program
  • Use post-completion OPT (not pre-completion) to maximize time
  • Find an E-Verify employer for the STEM extension
  • Start H-1B conversations with your employer early
  • Conclusion: The STEM OPT is the US's biggest draw for international tech students. Three years of work authorization at top companies is an incredible opportunity to launch your career.
